2024 saw a rebound in events after a drop off in 2023. 2024 was the third highest year since 2017, increasing by 22.9% over 2023 and passing the 300 mark. The best years for event were in the post COVID period, 2021 & 2022.
Participation in 2024 was similar to 2023, holding steady at 36k. Women’s participation was slightly down at 4%, compared with 4.4% in 2023. Similarly Junior participation was slightly down on 2023 at 6% vs 7.4%.
Despite participation being steady in 2024, catches continue to increase, up 22.9% on 2023. Overall catches have increased 80.8% since 2021 showing that year on year, fishers have been getting better returns on their competition effort.
As with the overall catch, the number of fish per competition day hit a high of 250 fish. The number of competitors per day has been stable since 2019, ranging between 100 and 130 fishers per day, highlighting that each year fishers have been more successful overall.
2024 saw a mastive increase in the number of days where 100+ fish were reported. This is more than double 2023, with the next best year being 2021 where 27.6% of days hit the 100 mark. The proportion of days where 1000+ fish were submitted also hit an all time high at 5.3% of days, more than double the next best 2.1% also in 2021.
